Trim and prep artichokes. See How to Trim an Artichoke.
Place trimmed artichokes top down (stem up) in a steamer insert.
Or, place them on their side in a large saucepan with about 1/2 inch of water.*See Chef’s Tip.
Cover with a lid and heat over medium high heat. Once the water starts to boil, turn to medium-low or low, and steam until tender, about 25-30 minutes. (Check by cutting through the stem, which should be slice easily.)
Remove the artichoke and drain in a colander or on a paper towel. Slice off the stem so the artichokes can sit upright on a plate. Be sure to eat the stem! Serve warm, at room temperature, or chill and serve later.
