Colanders are very useful, and we recommend buying at least two.
- Large – A stainless steel mesh colander is recommended to rinse and drain foods like pasta, rice, and beans. A metal one can double as a steamer insert, as long as it fits into your large saucepan. One with a fine mesh accommodates rinsing even tiny grains like quinoa.
- Small – Can be purchased individually or as part of a set that also includes the large colander. Alternatively, buy a long-handled mesh strainer, which can also be used as a small colander and a steamer insert.
We use our large colander when we pick vegetables in the garden:
Our long-handled colander is perfect for rinsing rice:
The above two colanders should handle most of your needs, but a set that includes more sizes is even better!
