Is your garden overflowing with monster zucchinis? No problem! August 8th is National Sneak Some Zucchini onto Your Neighbor’s Porch Day! And that’s not all. There are many reasons to celebrate this month:
- Summer’s not over yet!
- It should begin to get cooler, even if just by a few degrees!
- It’s Peach month, and we’ve been taking advantage! (See Peach Cobbler)
- And finally, it’s National Sandwich Month!
Sandwiches are the original fast food, and legend tells us they were first invented in 1762 when John Montague, the Fourth Earl of Sandwich, was too busy to cook. He was in the middle of gambling and ordered the waiter to bring him some roast beef between two slices of bread so he could eat at the table.
Who knows if that’s really true, but times sure haven’t changed much! How often do you eat a sandwich while doing something else like working at the computer, reading a book or even driving to work? I don’t think that’s what they mean by “mindful” eating.
This month we want to share a few sandwich ideas with you. We hope you’ll take the opportunity to pack sandwiches in a picnic basket along with some fresh peaches, then head out to the lake, ocean, or mountains where you can enjoy the last few weeks of the summer break with your loved ones.
One of our favorite sandwiches is the classic turkey sandwich. We start with a flavorful whole grain bread and add a little turkey and cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, avocados, and a little mustard or mayonnaise.
Other favorites include our super melty Classic Grilled Cheese Sandwich:
Our light and refreshing Egg Salad Sandwich:
And Radish and Cream Cheese Sandwich (not so classic!):
