Berry Good Smoothie

May 16, 2017 by Finite Foodie Leave a Comment

“I’ve been drinking this for years and feel so much better when I start the day this way. Blueberry is my favorite, especially if I’m adding powdered greens, since the deep purple color holds up against the green. When possible, buy organic berries, especially strawberries, which are one of the most highly sprayed fruits. Recent research suggests that dairy might inhibit the absorption of phytonutrients in blueberries, but I really like whey protein because of the high content of leucine, a muscle-building amino acid. Until there’s more research on this, I’ve decided to take turns using whey and plant-based protein powders. And sometimes I’ll use a nut butter instead. (Note that whey powder makes this smoothie fluffier. The volume will increase but that’s due to extra air, not substance.)

Using ice cubes makes a thicker smoothie than the water. Adjust the amounts depending on add-ins and your preference. We’ve listed our most commonly added extras, but feel free to keep it simple with just the 3 main ingredients, or add whatever you want (e.g., nutritional yeast, bee pollen, liquid vitamins, fish oil, etc.). Pack as much nutrition as you can into this super healthful smoothie.” ~ Bobbi

Instructions
  1. Add ice cubes up to the 1-cup mark on the blender container. Alternatively, add 1/2 cup cold water.
  2. Pour in enough almond milk to reach the 1-cup mark (about 1/2 cup).
  3. Add remaining ingredients and blend until smooth.
Recipe Notes

Tip: If you have a really good blender, you can add fresh greens, but we usually use a powdered greens product like Green Vibrance, which contains enzymes, probiotics and a wide range of superfoods. If using whey protein power, look for whey from grass-fed, pastured cows if possible. Choose plain whey concentrate that has NOT been denatured, heated, or broken down into isolates.

HOW TO SET UP YOUR FIRST KITCHEN (Click on photo to read more.)

KITCHEN ESSENTIALS

Our concept for the Finite Foodie® has these simple goals in mind —

1. To provide simple, clear steps for setting up your first, probably small kitchen with a minimal amount of equipment and investment.

2. To teach you cooking basics,  terminology and terms, and common conversions and equivalents.

3. To inspire you with healthful, easy recipes.

When we simmer a chicken in water (see our recipe for Slow Cooked Chicken) we end up with a pot full of rather bland chicken broth. No problem! Once we’ve removed the meat, we add the carcass back to the broth, throw in some vegetables and make a rich and complex bone broth. You can…
