“When my husband and I were first courting, we went out to the lawn on our college campus to watch fireworks on the Fourth of July. We took a picnic, including the guacamole in our Picnic menu, and watched as the fireworks showered the sky. We also had our first kiss that night. Then, two years later, my husband proposed to me at our favorite spot in a national park (picnic included!) Needless to say, picnics are kind of special to us. We hope you will enjoy this menu for National Picnic Day (April 23), International Picnic Day (June 18), or any beautiful day!” ~ Rebecca
PERFECT PICNIC MENU
These recipes always make it on our list for a picnic. The keys to a successful and eco-friendly picnic are within your grasp!
- Pick items that are good cold. You don’t want to have to worry about heating things up (unless you are grilling!). Salads make the perfect cold item choice for your picnic.
- Store things in reusable containers to avoid trash. Mason jars are perfect for your drinks and we recommend mixing up some delicious options like our Strawberry Mint Citrusade ahead of time! (You can also add some gin or vodka to make this drink an adult version.) We recommend that you store all of your items in dishes you can take home with you, ideally glass containers like Pyrex.
- Consider biodegradable options! There are now some inexpensive options for biodegradable flatware that are accessible in most areas. You can look into some forks, spoons and knives, napkins and even straws. If you don’t want to use reusable flatware, these make great options. Ultimately, we live by the “Pack In, Pack Out” idea. This basically means that whatever you bring in, you bring out.
- Citronella. Well, we hate to break it to you but the candles don’t work. What will work is some essential oil! You can buy this from any vendor or even a natural foods store like Whole Foods. You want to be sure you protect yourselves from bugs so you can enjoy your time.
