The past couple of weekends, Rebecca and her husband have been working hard on a gardening project: pulling a large, dead stump out of their backyard. So, in honor of National Gardening Exercise Day, we are sharing this project with you and hope you will share your gardening projects with us!
This project started because the stump had simply become an eye-sore. It was sitting right in the middle of the backyard. It was serving very little purpose other than creating new mowing challenges. The spot gets full sun most of the day and was truly an underused part of the yard. Equipped with naive optimism and basic gardening tools, they went to work.
Here’s where they started:
It was a slow process to dig it out, mostly because of how many roots they uncovered!
Slowly but surely they were able to dig the stump out and start to get underneath it.
They finally found a weak spot and had success!
And, naturally, they had to take some muscle shots standing on the stump.
We hope you will share your garden exercise adventures with us too!
But wait! We can’t leave you without any recipes, so we have a great refreshment for you to enjoy after you’ve tackled your garden project. Our Homemade Mojito is absolutely delicious but it is extra-special when you add our Homemade Herb Simple Syrup. If you’ve got some mint growing like a weed outside, like we do, then these recipes are perfect for you. (And don’t worry, you can make a virgin mojito if desired!)

I installed a raised bed this year to grow some veggies. There is plenty of room for vegetables and herbs. I tried to combine plants which support each other. I also experiment with a little insect house. The first guests already arrived. Its great fun to see every day how the veggies grow. One also has to live with some losses. I live in an area with lots of rain, so the snails are never far away. Protect my salads with a collar. It worked quite well so far.

The collars are a great idea, and they look pretty too! Let us know how the insect house works. We just put out a non-toxic Japanese beetle trap and got our first one about 5 minutes later.

FYI, if you want to post a photo of your garden, you’ll need to do so on our Facebook page @bareboneskitchen. We’d love to see it there!
