Hot cereal is an easy-to-make and very satisfying breakfast. There are many options including oats, oat bran, cream of rice, cream of wheat, and cream of buckwheat, as well as combinations of grains. We suggest you follow the package instructions for the type of hot cereal purchased. However, if you buy various types of oats in the bulk section, follow this simple cooking guide for preparing them.
We use water, milk, or a combination of the two, as the liquid component. Some people like thick oatmeal, others thin. Adjust the amount of liquid to make it just right for you.
For rolled oats: See recipe below.
For steel-cut oats: 3 parts liquid for 1 part steel-cut oats, using 1/2 cup oats per serving.
Cook 20 minutes.
For oat bran: 1 cup liquid and 1/3 cup oat bran per serving.
