Greg is a big fan of Chinese 5-Spice blend and included it on his list of the top 5 spices he likes to use. This surprised the rest of the family, since none of us had ever even heard of it!
Chinese 5-spice is a blend that most people either really like or really dislike, primarily because of the anise flavor. Since the ratio of spices (and even the exact spices used) can vary from one brand to the next, we suggest you find one that suits your taste preferences. We’ve discovered that Chinese 5-spice, in small amounts, can lend a subtle complexity to many dishes, but here we bring it front and center to be the star. Use this dressing on coleslaw, salads or as a dip for crudité.

This creamy 5-spice dressing will give your coleslaw a unique, zippy flavor. We also like it with crudité, a wedge of cabbage, green salads, boiled potatoes and even as a dip for chicken wings.
Tools:small bowl, whisk or fork
|
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 1/2 teaspoon hot pepper sauce like Sriracha (use less Tabasco)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon Chinese 5-spice
- 1/4 teaspoon chili powder
- 1/4 teaspoon honey or sugar
- 1 pinch black pepper ground
- Combine all ingredients in a small bowl. Mix well with whisk or fork. Chill.
SERVING SUGGESTION:
- Use as a coleslaw dressing, on a green salad, or with crudité.
- Drizzle over boiled potatoes, grilled fish or chicken.
- Use as a dip for chicken wings.
* Chef’s Tip: Hot sauce will intensify in heat as it stands, so don’t overdo it. You can always add more later. Sriracha is not as hot as Tabasco, and all hot sauces vary. If you’re uncertain, start with 1/4 teaspoon and add more later, if desired.
