Raw Cranberry Relish

November 17, 2016 by Finite Foodie Leave a Comment

“We usually avoided the cranberry sauce growing up because it was a congealed glob from a can, complete with the can’s indentations. However, once my mom (Nana) started making fresh cranberry sauce, we realized it could taste great. Although not Nana’s recipe, we’ve come up with a similar version that is quick, simple and packed…

Giblet Gravy

November 17, 2016 by Finite Foodie Leave a Comment

This is Nana’s classic Thanksgiving recipe for giblet gravy. But, what are giblets you ask? This is a term used for the organs of the bird, which are usually found stored in a paper pouch inside the cavity. They normally include the heart, gizzard, kidneys and liver, but sometimes include the neck as well. Note…

Almond Gingersnaps (GF)

November 17, 2016 by Finite Foodie 1 Comment

We love ginger, and this recipe is a great way to enjoy it. They cookies can turn out crisp or chewy, depending on the exact length of time and the temperature of the oven (which varies in spite of what the oven reads). Adjust the cooking time according to your circumstances and your preference, anywhere…

Asian Pear Salad

November 17, 2016 by Finite Foodie Leave a Comment

This recipe will make a large dinner salad for one person or a side salad for 2-3 people. It’s also easy to double or triple for a larger crowd if you’d like to serve it at a dinner party. This is lovely but still quite simple to do. We like to serve this with our…

Spiced Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies

November 3, 2016 by Finite Foodie Leave a Comment

These cookies will be soft and tender, almost cake-like. Pumpkin takes the place of eggs, so they’re easier than most to convert to vegan by substituting coconut oil for the butter, if desired. Made with whole wheat flour, pumpkin, and pumpkin seeds (or nuts), these are a relatively healthful cookie. (We have used white flour…

Peanut Butter Chocolate Blondies (GF)

November 3, 2016 by Finite Foodie Leave a Comment

“We’ve made black bean brownies, so we thought, ‘Why not make white bean blondies?’  When we tried it out on our family, we asked them to guess the secret ingredient. Everyone was very surprised when we told them we had used white beans instead of flour. You will need an electric mixer to blend these…

APPLE PECAN CRISP

October 27, 2016 by Finite Foodie Leave a Comment

“I’m a southern girl, so I like pecans in just about everything, including apple crisp. We always had pecan trees in our yard, as did my grandparents, so we feasted on pecans all year long.  To this day I still receive bags of fresh pecans from my parents whenever I run out, and they’re still…

Honey Orange Gingerbread

September 26, 2016 by Finite Foodie Leave a Comment

We love gingerbread, but we know some people are not fans of molasses. Try this citrusy, spicy version made with honey instead. You can leave out the orange zest and fresh ginger if you don’t have any, but the flavors won’t be quite as intense. This is a favorite autumn and winter dessert in our house.

Quick Tamale Casserole

September 25, 2016 by Finite Foodie Leave a Comment

“Nick and I try to make most things from scratch, but sometimes that just doesn’t happen. We love Mexican food, so this one of our favorite meals to prepare when we don’t have much time. Choose all-natural and preferably organic brands of the ingredients. (Read the labels.) Sometimes we prepare polenta from a mix and…

Fresh Tomato and Basil Soup

September 19, 2016 by Finite Foodie Leave a Comment

There’s nothing better than fresh summer tomatoes, especially from your own garden! The only problem is that they all seem to ripen at the same time. That’s when we pull out our recipe for Fresh Tomato Basil Soup. Served with crusty bread and some cheese, this is one of our favorite summertime meals. Even if…

HOW TO SET UP YOUR FIRST KITCHEN (Click on photo to read more.)

KITCHEN ESSENTIALS

Our concept for the Finite Foodie® has these simple goals in mind —

1. To provide simple, clear steps for setting up your first, probably small kitchen with a minimal amount of equipment and investment.

2. To teach you cooking basics,  terminology and terms, and common conversions and equivalents.

3. To inspire you with healthful, easy recipes.

When we simmer a chicken in water (see our recipe for Slow Cooked Chicken) we end up with a pot full of rather bland chicken broth. No problem! Once we’ve removed the meat, we add the carcass back to the broth, throw in some vegetables and make a rich and complex bone broth. You can…
